Watch: American Music Awards Performances- Kanye, Beyonce, Rihanna, Alicia Keys, Ne-Yo, Mariah

The American Music Awards took place last night and featured some great performances by music A-listers. Here are a few of the performances in no particular order.

Kanye West performed “Heartless” . I love the stage set and Kanye brought a lot of intensity and emotion to his performance. I know a lot of people aren’t feeling the auto-tuner, but the effect was slightly subtle and didn’t drown out Kanye’s distinct delivery. Good performance by Mr. West.

Beyonce performed “Single Ladies”. This is pretty much the same performance from Saturday Night Live, but she did a great job. Her outfit was cute and she was working the hell out of that ponytail. I can’t wait to see what she does for the other songs on her album. She was filming a video for “Diva” this weekend so it’s only a matter of time before she starts performing it live.

Rihanna performed “Rehab” and she did an excellent job. I’ve been saying for 8 months now that this chick has more talent than she is given credit for and she showed a glimpse into how much she has grown vocally in her performance. I’m sure there will still be people who will shrug and say she is wack, but you can’t deny that she hit and held some impressive notes. I loved her performance and she looked stunning as usual.

Alicia Keys performed “Superwoman” and brought out Queen Latifah and Katherine Battle. Alicia sounded great, Queen was tight but the AMA needed to get their sh!t together messing up her mic, and Katherine’s voice was beautiful. One thing that totally sucked about the AMAs is their videography. Apparently they lost sight of the fact that there are millions of people watching at home, so they cut off stage production elements that were intended to enhance the performances. This performance exemplified that when they didn’t have any clear shots with the photo montage in the background. You could that they were showing pictures of people but they were cut off 85% of the time. But anyway, the montage was a nice gesture from the always gracious Alicia Keys. It was a great way to close out the show with an uplifting performance and a (cut off) shot of our next First Lady.

Ne-Yo performed “Closer” and “Miss Independent”. Ne-Yo looked quite dapper and I loved the classic and elegant throwback production. I think he forgot background singers though which would’ve made performance more seamless. Overall though, solid, lively, good performance.

Mariah Carey performed her new single “I Stay In Love”. It seems like she is just on cruise control these days..not really tripping or putting much effort forth, but there were some shining moments in this performance towards the end. It would be nice to see that same hunger that she had with the Emancipation of Mimi album in her again, but this was a solid if not stellar performance. Oh yeah and I don’t know if Nick helping her down the stairs made him seem like a dotting husband or a servant, but that was quite nice of him.

What do you guys think of the performances? Who did you like? Who should’ve stayed at home?

Watch: Keri Hilson- Turnin Me On featuring Lil Wayne

Keri Hilson has a new video for her song “Turnin Me On” featuring Lil Wayne. This is one of those songs that had to grow on me, but now I love it. I guess in this recession everyone wants to shoot their video with the plain white background, but at least Keri throws in some choreography rather than just standing there the entire time. Keri looks great, except for that one tomboy look…I don’t know what that is all about but I’m not feeling it. Overall, decent video for a good song. It should at least keep people interested in seeing what she comes with next.

Listen: Lil Kim- Download featuring T-Pain

Lil Kim has a new song called “Download” featuring T-Pain. The second the “Computer Love” sample kicked I’m instantly feeling it. The lyrics of song are kinda funny…I don’t know if that is their intent, but I can’t help but find humor in talking about hooking up over Myspace and “top 8″s.  T-Pain and Lil Kim make a pretty hot duo…I might have to start giving T-Pain more credit for his talent This is the first Lil Kim song that doesn’t low budget as hell in a long time. I have to say that now I’m actually interested in seeing what else she comes with. There are pretty much no female rappers on the scene so I wouldn’t mind a Lil Kim comeback. Click here to listen

What do you guys think of this song? Can we really hate on T-Pain for being on every song if he is making upgrading it? Which female rapper would like to see make a comeback?

Watch: Solange- T. O. N. Y.

Solange has a new video for her song “T.O.N.Y.”. I actually really like this. This is the first time that Solange has dropped all the over the top styling and the whole 60s Supremes act and just did her own thing. one of my complaints about her is that her image seems too contrived, but I’m digging what seems like the authentic Solange. The song is great and the video is pretty clever. The whole sitting on the toilet thing was a little odd, but I’ll give her a pass since it made sense in the context of the song and the plot of the video. I think a lot of people will be able to relate to this song and I can see this potentially being a big hit. Thumbs up!

What do you guys think of the video? Isn’t it nice to finally see a more personal side of Solange rather than her just playing dress up? Have you ever had a T.O.N.Y. that made you want to kick yourself?

Watch: Robin Thicke- Sweetest Love

Robin Thicke has a new video for his song “Sweetest Love”. I really love this song…but I’m a little disappointed with the video. First though…I gotta give him credit for showing love to Black women (more so than some of these Black men in the music biz). However, the chemistry between Robin and Jessica White was very forced and unnatural. Also, I was expecting something softer and sweeter (closer to “Lost Without You”) rather than sexual and aggressive. For the song to be about two people deeply in love the video did not sell that message at all. But…overall it’s an ok video. If Robin put a little more thought, creativity, and money into the video it could have been a lot better.

Listen: Common- Be (Alternative Version)

Common has a song (not sure how new or old it is) but it is kinda hot. It sounds like a freestyle to me and since HipHopDx is calling it the original version of “Be” I will have to take their word for it…even though the lyrical content is nowhere near the direction of “Be”. It’s a short track and I don’t have much to say…just felt like sharing. Click here to listen

Thoughts? Which direction would like to see Common go in for his new album- Be, Finding Forever, his first single “Universal Mind Control” from the new album, or something more throwback?

Listen: The-Dream- Cringing

The Dream has a new song called “Cringing”. I’m kinda digging this. The song is very catchy and I can see this being a hit. I’m surprised he didn’t throw in any ella-ella-ehs…some people find that annoying but I find it a lil charming lol. Click here to listen

What do you guys think of the song? Are you ready for another Dream album?

Watch: Avant- Break Ya Back

Avant has a new song and video called “Break Ya Back”. Hmmm…well the song is actually kinda cool..but the video is so low budget. I mean damn you can see the chick’s facial scars and her hair was a hot mess. Avant looks chunky buff, which is a little…different. He is an attractive guy but he needs to lay off the steroids and slim down because he doesn’t look natural. Anyway he and the leading lady had chemistry but Avant should’ve gone all Usher Trading Places with it and switched it up some more. Overall I would have to say that the video is not a hit, but the song might be enough to get the grown and sexy crowd interested in Avant’s music again.

Watch: Rihanna- Rehab featuring Justin Timberlake

Rihanna’s new video for “Rehab” debuted today and features Justin Timberlake as her leading guy. I love, love, love this video! Rihanna looks gorgeous and she and Justin make a smokin hot duo. Their chemistry sizzles without being over the top. You could feel the angst and tension of the lyrics and her voice in the acting and I love the desert setting. The different colors and Rihanna’s styling are stunning. I’ve been looking forward to seeing this video and it exceeds my expectations. This is a definitely a hit! It looks like Rihanna isn’t in a rush to relinquish her spot on the top so easily to Beyonce and with this video Bey might have some competition on her hands.

What do you guys think of the video?  Which single will be the bigger hit- Rehab or If I Were A Boy?

Thumbs Up or Thumbs Down- Watch: Mya- Paradise

Mya has a new video for a song called “Paradise”. Man talk about falling off…this is super low budget. She could’ve at least went to the beach or gone up on a mountain to shoot a video where sings “welcome to Paradise”. The song is okay…definitely not something that is going to re-launch her career. I’m going to give her the benefit of the doubt and guess that this was a rough draft and she is not really serious with this.

Thumbs up or thumbs down? Who is going to have the harder time making a comeback- Brandy or Mya?
