Political Notes: Sarah Palin on SNL, Colin Powell Endorses Obama
I know I’m a few days late but it would be blogging malpractice to not post the hilarity that was Saturday Night Live this past Saturday. Sarah Palin clearly look mortified and totally out of her element around the “liberal media elite”. But…watching her look totally oblivious to the fact that she was literally the punchline of every joke made everything that much funnier. The opening skit with Tina Fey was classic as usual. It’s pretty ballsy to totally skewer someone knowing they are backstage watching. But to me, Amy Poehler one upped Tina with her rap on Weekend Update. I mean shooting a moose? F(*king hilarious! I’ll give Palin credit for dancing on beat, but she was clueless that everyone was laughing at her not with her. Anyway…check out both skits…
Opening Skit:
Weekend Update
Colin Powell made political shockwaves when he not only gave Barack Obama a ringing endorsement for the presidency, but totally annihilated any logical reason for supporting John McCain. It was a thorough and eloquent endorsement as a well as sound rebuke of the disgusting, hateful, and dangerous campaign that McCain has run. It is truly one of the most remarkable endorsements of the entire campaign.
Powell on Meet The Press
How do you guys think Palin did on SNL? Was it a good idea for her to go on the show? Should she have participated more? What do you think of Powell’s endorsement of Obama? Isn’t it telling how quickly it took for conservatives to throw Powell under the bus? Why is it that high profile Republicans like Susan Eisenhower can endorse Obama without accused of being racist but Powell can’t? Isn’t it both demeaning to Obama’s candidacy and Powell’s stature to attribute the endorsement to race rather than the very detailed argument that Powell laid out?

Amy P was hilarious. What made it even more funny, or sad depending upon how you look at it, was that Sarah Palin had no idea that she was being ridiculed. I honestly believe that she cannot comprehend English. I have never witnessed the SNL cast rip someone in the manner they did Palin. That woman has no idea about the world or even the most simplistic thoughts and trials people endure on a daily basis.
And Colin Powell not only endorsed Obama, he gave concrete, specified examples that stated why Obama is the better candidate. It says so much for someone who has worked with the Clinton and Bush Administrations to come out and not only openly support the member from the other party, yet to also state why the member from his own party is inferior. Powell’s endorsement truly pokes holes into the McCain campaign. Those who still support McCain have no reason to denounce Obama. Powell has shed lead onto the tackless debacle McCain has openly conducted.
The smear tactic against Obama is just disgusting. They accuse him of being a muslim and a terrorist. I like the point Powell made about McCain. For the last few weeks McCain and Palin have been making a big deal about Ayers and when he had the chance the talk about it doing the debate he called Ayers a washup terrorist.
I notice that the Republican have been bashing Democratic. Whenever they see a black guy supporting Obama they just assume he is doing it because of race. Despite the fact that one reason Obama is doing so well is because of youth vote they keep saying stuff like the youth are not going to show up or black people are just voting for Obama because he is black. Say what you want about Obama, but facts are facts.
Sarah Palin is hot. I wouldn’t mind getting political with her J/P.
Powell’s timing of his endorsement sounds a little strange to me. All the statements he’s made are nothing new. They’re on the public record and any sane person would have been able to come to that conclusion. He wasnt that convincing, rather sobered. The term “Muslim” has been grossly misinformed. This is the same guy that was instrumental in endosring, manipulating fabrication of WMD’s and pushing for the Iraq war (despite being an outsider), intrinsically linked and part of the failed Bush administration. How effective can his opinion be? It might swing some voters but don’t believe the hype. I also question how many people actually remember who he was? Just because it was said doesnt mean it will. He and Obama believe in nothing similar, except that this is a historic election. That is “a” reason why people are linking the issue to race. And sadly, there still remain a good majority of people out there who think like that.
Colin Powell did the right thing. He knows he made mistales in the past and allowed himself to be used. He is the character “The General” from “Undecover Brother”.
Barack Obama should, and will be the next President of the United States of America.
I am sick of Palin. November 4 cannot come soon enough.
viciuzurban..I learned at work that Obama being endorsed by Collin Powell is a huge deal…He is an icon in the Republican Party and has the reputation of looking that the issues and being fair..as far as the war in Iraq..Powell was not given all the details and also wanted to pull the troops out…I think that Bush wanted him gone because he went against his beliefs..I thought it was strange at first too..but apparently BOTH candidates were fighting hard for Powell’s endorsement for years…I think that the Senior Members of his cabinet voicing their prejudice was the final straw for Powell…but like politics you know there is always more going on than what is being said…
Thanks for posting Reccie
I respect Sarah Palin for going on the show, especially when people on the Republican side try to say the skits are sexist every chance they get…like I said before Sarah Palin is probably a great woman in “real life” and for that I respect her, but her ambitions are too big for now…
I’m a little bothered by how some people reacted to Colin Powell’s endorsement, saying that he only did it because Barack Obama is black…I can’t wait for this election to be over because some of the things that are coming out(mainly from the McCain/Republican camp) have been so hateful and disgusting…Powell deserves more respect than what his political party is giving him, it takes a lot of courage to go against your own political party and for that I applaud him…
vic…to say that Colin Powell was instrumental in pushing the case that Iraq had WMDs is true. To say that he was instrumental in manipulating evidence or lying about the evidence is not true. He was lied to and misled and by all accounts he was concerned about the veracity of the evidence. There is absolutely no truth the charge that he intentionally misled the public about the war. He knows that it is a mark against his record and standing.
HOWEVER…let’s not get the game twisted and scapegoat Powell. What is absolutely clear is that the Bush administration was determined to go to war with Iraq and manipulated evidence to make their case. Powell is a convenient fall guy but with or without him the war would’ve happened. Also, I have to point out that Powell made his case before the UN to garner support. The US went to war without the UN’s stamp of approval so ultimately Powell’s presentation though incorrect, did not have the effect of getting the green light from the world to invade Iraq. The blame falls squarely on Bush. The congress gave the President the power to attack Iraq and BUSH used it.
Anyway…Colin Powell is very well known, very highly respected, and his favorability ratings are in the 80s. So, yes people know who Colin Powell is, and for the most part he is held in high regard.
of course you would say that but in the spirit of unbias reporting you know I had to play devils advocate. When I say do people know who he is, I am asking do you know what his record is? There’s real danger in ignoring the past and the lessons that should be learned. As you referenced, he took the case to the UN, what bigger audience do you need, he abused his position of power, regardless of the fact that he was lied to by the CIA, in a perfect world the UN would have hauled his ass and Bush to the international criminal court in the Hague. The fact is that he blackmailed nation states, used American influence within the region and threats such as strategic, trade, economic sanctions and post-war oil as bargaining chips, fast-tracked or closed down free trade agreements and the world in fear bought the presentation– he reiterated that those countries which opposed the war would suffer serious consequences and they did. This isn’t something new. International diplomacy does not work like you have suggested – when Bush et al knew that they couldn’t get authorization from a number of UN security council resolutions they got desperate and in typical fashion dismissed the UN and went it on their own with Britain and Australia doggy paddling behind in toe. Did you forget Powell was a staunch supporter of torture, of attacking Iran? He mattered then. Now, not really. Even Joe Biden referenced WMDs. Saddam was no threat to the international community, rather only to US interests. It’s funny how the media hypes it up for all its worth. I don’t recall Mccain calling Obama a Muslim? Can someone correct that? Once again Powell doesn’t have the balls to be direct. IMO, he’s lost whatever shred of respect he’s garnered as a decorated soldier.
