Listen- Beyonce- Single Ladies and If I Were a Boy

Beyonce is back with a new song “Single Ladies (Put A Ring On it)”. All I gotta say is “preach sista”! I’m digging the message of the song and to be honest if more women were bad a$$ enough to demand a higher level of commitment from the men they are dealing with rather than allowing themselves to get jerked around indefinitely then the relationship dynamics between men and women as a whole in our society would be very different. I’m sure there are going to be plenty of guys talking junk and being naysayers, so I’m saying “womp womp” in advance. Love the song…it’s definitely going to be a hit. Click here to listen

Beyonce has another track “If I Were a Boy” that just hit the net. I saw some pics from the video that she shot for the song a few weeks ago, so I’m actually quite surprised that this song is a ballad. Beyonce’s voice sounds great and the lyrics are good, but I’m not feeling the country/pop production of this at all. Click here to listen

What do you guys think of Beyonce’s new tracks? Which song did you like better? Do you think Beyonce is trying to steal Michelle Williams last little bit of thunder by releasing these singles on the same day as Michelle’s album?

i like both tracks! i really wasn’t expecting what i heard and i can tell that bey is going a different direction this time around. if i were a boy is da jam, and the chorus on single ladies is catchy as hell. and as far as michelle goes, she had no thunder to begin with so….

I love IIWAB! I like the lyrics and it’s an enpowering song. I can’t wait for the video to see how it all ties in with the song. I’m still on the fence with Singles Ladies. I like it. It’s catchy, fun and a dance song. I’m sure with the right video I will be loving it!

As for Michelle I don’t think Bee releasing her singles has anything to do with Michelle’s album sales. If you’re a die hard Michelle fan you are going to buy Michelle’s album regardless of Beyonce releaseing 2 singles. Plus these are singles and that’s an entire album. There’s really nothing to think about.

Beyonce voice is amazing. She is transforming and evolving into this super power voice. In my opinion she’s already an Icon! I can’t wait for her album, the promo, talk shows, concerts, awards show etc….it’s long overdue.

Denise…I agree Beyonce is an icon. I think you can definitely hear more passion and emotion in Beyonce’s songs…she believes in what she is singing and she has matured a lot over the years. I appreciate that even her fun songs have an empowering message.

And you are both right…Michelle had no thunder to begin with lol.

i thought both these songs were weak

how unoriginal is the premise of “IIWAB”, its been done a million times over & the backing track sounds too similar to fergie’s “big girls dont cry”. and another Boo for Beyonce not writing this song but already taking writing credit for the entire album.

single ladies sounds retarded and like a rehash of her Bday album. the beat is piss-poor— Boo to dream for producing this garbage

i expected much more from beyonce

the songs that leaked when beonce’s album was rumored to be a dance album were far more interesting than this

@jermar — the songs sound alike because they were both written and produced by the same guy….can’t think of his name at the moment.

I don’t really like either one of the songs but I think I can ‘learn’ (played over and over on the radio) to like the Single Ladies song. I heard the original “If I Were a Boy” song that was written by BC Jean and her version sounds a lot better than Bey’s. Her voice goes better on the track because she sounds mor country/pop.

Single Ladies - Sounds like “Get Me Bodied Part II” but its a good message / girl power song.

If I Were A Boy - I never heard BC Jean’s version, but I am not surprised Beyonce would sing another person’s song and call it her own - just look at her track record. Anyway, some of the lyrics on “If I Were A Boy” are questionable - why can’t she do that now as a woman? Yea - this is okay at best.

Bey Stans - yes, I think Bey’s music is okay - made for the ladies…and I won’t purchase any Bey record ever…

I dont like Single ladies cause it sounds like Get me Bodied part deux. If I were A Boy started out nice but then Beyonce starts screaming through the track and it becomes less genuine in emotion. I think I can learn to love that track though. I don’t believe Beyonce is an icon to me. She really doesn’t have a lot of solo hits and she sells discs more on her popularity and not on any perceivable hits. She hasn’t taken any risks either. The last time around she released Deja Vu which was a Crazy In Love rehash and now she’s doing this. She’s playing it way too safe to be considered an icon. And one other thing. While Michelle’s die hard fans will most likely buy her album, so will Beyonce’s too. The point is the record label’s/ management’s job is really to sell the album to the casual fan. Do you really believe the 3 million copies sold of Beyonce’s B’Day were alll die hard fans? No, the record label promoted her album and spent the time to get her out there and sell her to the skeptics. They haven’t done that with Michelle or anyone else in the Music World camp. It’s always been about Beyonce. How come everytime a former DC member releases anything Beyonce has to have a product out too? I mean, SOLANGE got way more publicity than Michelle, she was in a commercial with her sister to promote her new album, but where has Michelle been?

I don’t see the GMB and SL likeness but that’s just me. I just saw a snippet of both videos and am loving loving both songs. Beyonce is an icon she has done and is doing the unexpected and things that haven’t been do before. She is not reinventing herself she is evolving. Now the whole writing thing is suspect. I did here the original by the original artist. I am to assume the original artist never released it as a single???

Record companies are in the business of making money, not losing money. Michelle has a history of poor record sales. If Michelle is unhappy with the direction of her musical career, she knows she can leave at anytime. I’m sure there’s a label willing to invest based on her “record sales” and popularity. As far as Bee selling 3 million…that really had nothing to do with marketing not after 1 million anyway. Bee got out there and promoted herself. B’day came out in 2006 and was still being playin in late 2007. She had one of the most successful concerts lastyear. I don’t believe the 3 mil were die hard fans. The die hard purchased the album within the first 2 weeks up to 4 depending on their finances at the time. B’Day is classic….I still listen to B’day to this very day.

Far as Solange….family is family and that’s just how family rolls. They look out for each other. Plus Solange had a solid album. Michelle had a solid “single”. I’m referring to Break the Dawn which I liked. I don’t know if it made the album. Why I’m not a fan of Michelle’s….her voice is annoying she sounds like a mouse.

I don’t believe she’s playing it safe. I think she’s evolving and stepping a little bit out of her comfort zone. Beyonce could sing humpty dumpty, I’d buy because at the end of the day……THE GIRL CAN SANG HER ASS OFF. What she can do vocally is beyond amazing.

First, single ladies sound kinda wack. It seems like she wanted another get me bodied. I personally believe she is changing up her genres because of other artist succeeding in them (RIHANNA).

Second, if i were a boy is not all that catchy. She has to do better if she want people to request these songs.

Denise, I appreciate your response and I’ll say one more thing: how can you base Michelle’s low record sales when her only 2 albums were gospel albums? Gospel sells to a very specific demographic and like country, exists outside of the mainstream. From what I’ve heard, her 2 albums were somehwat of a success for the genre. Now you can’t go by gospel sales to prove that she isn’t bankable because she has yet to put out a mainstream record. I do agree with yo that her voice is kinda mousey and this could be off-putting. But the point is Destiny’s Child was a very popular group and out of all their fans, there is probably a nice enough portion of people who are fans of Michelle. I mean if Pussycat Doll fans can have a favorite (Nicole is the only who sings in the group) then surely Michelle is a favorite to somebody out there. The record label needed to let those people aware she’s putting a mainstream record out, but what can you do..? Oh, and the record label markets albums down to the very last minute. Beyonce of course has her input (like deciding to do the B’Day video comp that the label argued against) but Columbia ultimately decides what do with her (singles, vids, interviews, etc.) every step of the way. If an artist is making that money the label will do its best to milk the hell out of the product. Just ask Rihanna. I’m gonna have to agree to disagree with you on the “evolving” bit. I believe B’Day was sonicaly different from DIL, but it seems like this album is a continuation of B’Day based on these 2 singles. For example, when Justin Timberlake came back in ‘06 with Sexyback it was unlike anything that existed on the radio at the time, incredibly unique and a big risk that could have flopped but did the opposite. I’m looking for that in Beyonce. She really needed to wait another year before releasing new material. She’s hot enough where she can wait as long as four years between records while still being relevant. As much as I critiscize her material, she’s the most likely (at this point) to achieve a 20+ year career.

I’m sorry I couldnt get through more than a minute of Single Ladies, it was borderline annoying. Not the message, just the song itself and yeah it does sound like something from Bday..I hope she has some other stuff that is better than that

single ladies was trash. wtf kind of message is this sending? i didnt get the notion of commitment at all - all i got was it’s my way or the highway - it goes both ways - it takes two to make a relationship work - going off and dancing with another guy because he didnt put a ring on it is really pathetic and the thing is dumb girls will eat this up and big up their ego’s even more.

in saying that, if i were a boy is the better song - better mainstream appeal. and yeah bey is no icon denise, i guess u didnt have a look at michelle’s “unexpected”, give credit where credit is due. and peep jhud’s debut just for good measure.

    This is easy!

The “Single Ladies” song is just a remix of “Get Me Bodied”!!!

The “If I were a Boy” song is just a ballad version of Ciara’s “If I was a Boy”!!!!!!!

Nothing new in either of these songs. Especially no love for the fella’s…….

If I had to compare Single Ladies (put a ring on it), I would compare it to Crazy in Love (uh oh uh oh uh oh no no).

Well I respect everyone’s opinion because we are entitled to it. It’s still early a month from now people will be singing and dancing a different tune. Thanks BigPhil for being level headed in your response.

Hmm. The production for Single Ladies isn’t all that great, although it does deliver an interesting, empowering message. I love If I Were a Boy, though. I can kinda connect to it, so maybe that’s why… and I love ballads. Great job, Beyyy!

And also, thanks for posting this! (:

    @t Mr H:
It’s not surprising that Beyonce would claim to have written a song for herself when obviously someone else may have. She tried that sh*t with Ne-yo. When he wrote “her biggest hit ever,TO THE LEFT” she “tried” to claim that she wrote it herself and none of us would have known otherwise if Ne-yo didn’t speak up and called her out on it!

@t tre I would have to agree with you, on that RIHANNA point! I do believe that a lot of artists out their are trying to follow in her step, seeming as how, she’s the hottest one out their right now. I guess that she’s not only a trendsetter when it comes to fashion, but I would have to say as a musician too.

As for these two B songs, I’d have to get back with my opinion after a few more listens.

Oh ya, congratulations to Rihanna and TI for having the no #1 song “LIVE YOUR LIFE” on the billboard Hot 100 chart!
This is her third no.#1 song on that, since this year.
DISTURBIA is no#4 and TAKE A BOW is STILL hanging in at no# 38 right now!!!

Her video for her song with TI is set to premiere sometime this week on BET. But am not sure………. And her next single REHAB will be released Nov of this year.

Both these songs are wack in my opnion.

‘Single Ladies’ has a good premise because every woman knows what its like to go out for the first time after a breakup and get her lil head blown up by niggas who aint gonna call her and just leave her missing her ex the next morning. So Bey is awesome at capturing that energy and attitude chicks carry in the club BUT she does it so much! Give us something more than another quick fix.

‘If I Were a Boy’……If you are going to do a song with the same exact idea as Ciara did over a year ago, let it be better than this, or better yet just don’t do it. I’m just having a hard time understanding what she is trying to do with these two songs and hope she’ll come with something better. But for now, not interested….
