DNC Update: Amazing Moments from Hillary, Bill, John Kerry, and Joe Biden
Tuesday night, Hillary Clinton took center stage at the Dem Convention and gave an absolutely incredible speech. There is no denying that Hillary put 18 million cracks in the glass ceiling and on the 88th anniversary of women being granted the right to vote it was totally fitting that Clinton had her moment in the spotlight. Even though the nomination battle was hard fought, intense, and often times bitter, she still deserves the utmost credit for her victories and the path she has paved for women to follow. I was extremely proud of Clinton for the class, dignity, and enthusiasm for Barack that she displayed last night. There were many great aspects of her speech but the two that stood out the most were the “were you in it for me” and the Harriet Tubman “keep going” parts. Kudos to Hillary for a job exceptionally done!
On Wednesday, the roll call at the convention in which both Hillary and Barack were nominated. Normally all of the states give a brief speech and state who they choose to vote for, but this time in an incredibly dramatic and exciting moment, Hillary Clinton interrupted the roll call and presented a motion to suspend the roll call and nominate Barack. It was such a remarkable moment and I couldn’t be happier that Hillary chose to be a part of it…and so it became official- Barack Obama is the first African American presidential candidate of a major political party in the US. I mean…just sit and think about that for a second. I am 25 years old and I NEVER EVER EVER EVER imagined that in MY lifetime that this country would ever see a Black person as President or even get nominated…yet here we are in 2008 on the verge of turning the page.
Bill Clinton took the stage and electrified the crowd. There has been so much controversy surrounding Bill and even I was very skeptical about whether or not he would deliver a full throated endorsement of Obama…but it was great to see him get on the stage and set aside his gripes for the sake of unity. John Kerry delivered a passionate and harsh speech attacking Bush and McCain for their failed leadership, terrible judgement, and for putting America on the wrong track. It was the kind of critique that I have been wanting to see and I hope to see more of in the future. I was a very strong and passionate supporter of John Kerry in 2004, so I was incredibly happy to see him deliver big time for Barack. More importantly, Kerry stood up for the truth meaning of patriotism in this country. Click here to watch
The Steven Spielberg produced video about our Troops was extremely touching. I think most Americans regardless of how they feel about the war have nothing but respect and admiration for our brave troops and veterans, so it is impossible to not be moved by the video. Tammy Duckworth gave an excellent speech and to see her stand tall despite her serious physical injuries was great.
Finally Joe Biden was formally nominated as the Vice President. His video montage and the introduction by his son were very touching. It is so remarkable that Biden went through such a tragic ordeal losing his wife and daughter and having to watch over his critically injured sons and yet persevered and always kept family first. It shows a great deal about his character and his speech proved that he is the right person to stand by Barack’s side to help take back the White House. Click here to watch
So…to sum up there were so many amazing and noteworthy moments of the night. For the past 3 election cycles I have followed the conventions of both the Democratic and Republican Parties…but I am following this one with a bigger stake than ever before. It is my hope, dream, and belief that Barack Obama will be the next President and when I have kids one day I want to be able to recount to them every historical moment the same way my grandparents told me about the civil rights movement.
There are tons of cynics and people who don’t feel a personal connection to what is happening in this country right now, but I feel the historical impact of this moment and I won’t sit by in apathy and disinterest. On Monday, Michelle made me feel more proud than ever to be a Black woman. On Tuesday, Hillary Clinton made me incredibly proud of the struggle she endured to put those 18 million cracks in the glass ceiling. And tonight, I was proud of the Democratic Party for nominating Barack and Joe and for honoring our troops and vets.
Have you been following the Dem Convention? What are some of your favorite moments? Do you feel a personal connection to the political process this year?

It’s official. Let’s go Obama!
I loved the Harriet Tubman part. It was one of those moments where I couldnt do a thing else but laugh to express my appreciation. Her sisterhood of the traveling pantsuits line was funny. She had a few other funny pats, like her twin cities quip too.
Bill did the job yesterday though, and spoke in favor of Obama. I thought on the political spectrum his speech was better than Hilary’s because it got the job done. To be fair, when she finally gave up her delegates she did a good job as well.
I fell into hysterics when Obama greeted McCain’s wife…but thats just cus me and my sis are silly.
I’ve def been following the convention, and overall I’ve been pleased.
Sasha Obama has to be the cutest thing ever.
I’m still obsessed with Michelle and her hair has been on a whole nother level of awesome!
This have been one interesting event to watch. I do think in the beginning the Dem had a big advantage over the Republican, but because of all the bad blood they kind of lost that advantage. It look like things are moving up for the Dem. It is no secret that Hilary fans felt like she was treated badly and unfairly and it was just easier for them to blame Obama. I wonder how many of those 18 million votes will vote for Obama. Looking back on it all I think things would had been better for the Democrat if Obama won Texas instead of Hilary. I guess it is a good thing that Rev Wright happened doing the Primary.
Obama and Biden 08!!
Mama Clinton made me smile =] I think that she was the highlight of the past three nights. Obama tonight! I CANT WAIT!
HillBilly came thru!!!
The Clintons did what they do best in the end. Say & do exactly what is needed at the time to make things OK!
GO B.O.!
I was wondering if anyone from the urban side paid attention to Kerry’s speech. TV One or BET didn’t cover it (I guess they are trying to make Kerry look irrelevant to black people not realizing that it was Kerry who gave Obama his first big time to shine in 04). Kerry has been Obama’s top surrogate and was one of the first big name Dems to endorse him back in January, when it wasn’t popular in MA.
But I guess it was set up not to upstage B. Clinton or Biden. They all gave good speeches and this was an exciting convention with Hillary’s roll call vote giving Obama the nomination.
