Thumbs Up or Thumbs Down: Mariah Carey Performs New Song “I’m That Chick You Like”
Mariah Carey performed her new song “I’m That Chick” for The Hills season premiere party. Even though once again Mariah is sounding hella shaky (please MC step the performance game up)…the song sounds hot. I like the flavor of this much more than “Touch My Body”. One of the HM readers (Ryan) asserted that we’re seeing like an 08 version of the disco with the return of so much dance music…and this definitely falls in line with that. I’ll give the song a thumbs up, but her performance a thumbs down.

I am a serious fan of Mariah but I think the song is weak. I want to see growth not the same old stuff
Haha damn I heard this last night!!! The studio version should blow this song’s quality up! I was imagining that fun ‘Fantasy’ Mariah!!! I love this song! Just because it’s so reminiscent!

I’ll tell you ONE thing…that performance was horrible. I’m wondering was Mariah sick or something… because i was in utter shock listening to the “The Hills” special (because we all know that Mariah can blow!). “Touch My Body” was Awful and then “We Belong Together” was even WORSE! …i didn’t hear the new song.. but i love Mariah’s style so I’m sure I will enjoy it…. I’m just hoping she was having a bad night, that night! lol

Monique…this isn’t the first time lately that Mariah has been sounding bad…she sounded pretty rough for her SNL performances. Honestly, I think she just doesn’t have that same hunger and grind that she used to. Her performances seem like she isn’t really trying at all…like she is just trying to look cute. I know she has it in her to at least sound good (her dancing has always been terrible)…but she needs to get a vocal tune up or something.
Look like Mariah might have another hit album on the way. Look like Usher and Mariah Carey are sticking to the same marketing plan they had four years ago.
Well as one of the biggest Mariah fans, out there, (what i’ve brought Touch my Body on iTunes so many times it’s not funny. gotta make #1 on the Billboard Next week or the week after..anywho).. will unbiasly say that the performance was good marketing, but still needs some work.
This will be her third single, after Bye Bye most likely, it’s still up in the air. I liked the single. I think she preformed it fairly well, not the best, I’ll admit. But the radio version will be hot for sure. A solid video and we’ll have another hit.
I’m glad she is showing her verstitality on this album, much like th TMOM.

but her vocals couldve been better…i know its in her to sing like she used to.
She was fantastic sounding on her TEOM dvd concert, i can’t wait till April 15th, its gonna be another hit for sure

I like this so much better than TMB. The performance although just ight was still better than anything else I’ve seen her do so far.
ill say this, she looks great (i saw a pic w/ her and the girls from the hills and she looked better than the chicks that are half her age)– and i like this song exponentially better than the whackness that is “touch my body”
BUT OMG what happened to her singing CHOPS!!! she sounds horrible. same goes for her SNL performances, they were intolerable. her vocals seem so damaged— that 5 octave range is now a mear memory of the early ’90s

If walking back and forth across the stage and finger-singing in the air is dancing, then, okay. You’d think that after all these years her management would have paid the best-of-the-best choreographers to hook a sista up. And yet, she seems content on just “looking pretty,” showing some skin, and waving her one free arm around. Am I hating on her? Mmmmmm, probably a little bit–she’s gorgeous. But, at least I have a little bit of rhythm. LOL If I made a fraction of what she does, you’d better believe that I’d be out there *attempting* to make it do what it do. O-kay?! lol…someone snuck their camera phone into the video shoot and video taped it? That’s pretty crazy. Anyway, trust me I’m on the lookout for the video…so as soon as it drops if I’m anywhere near a computer I will be posting it ASAP.
Kimberly…I was gonna do a post blasting Kilpatrick and NY’s Patterson…but I just never got around to it. That means needs to step his ass down and move on with life…clearly he had some shadiness going on and we can’t have no Black men effing up right now in public office. lol
But anyway…she has tried to dance in the past she just has a remarkable lack of rhythm. I think her and Ashanti are the wackest dancers out there.
while i don’t think she’s still on that 1990-type caliber of live performances, i don’t think she sucks.
sad part is…as “bad” as she may sound live….she still runs circles around the studio version of some of these other R&B folx.
we seem to forget that Mariah came into the industry as a SINGER. not a performer/entertainer. we’re kinda spoiled now by all the Beyonce’s, Ciara’s and Janet’s of the world. in 1990, we weren’t asking for our singers to pull off choreographed routines. but now that we have so many ‘performers’ in the industry (who are usually using their dancing to distract you from their ’singing’)…it’s what we’ve come to expect.
MC doesn’t look like the type to bust out a Soulja Boy (thank God)….she looks too prissy for that. and what do prissy girls do? stand there & look pretty. i’m not gonna fault her for that. she’s sticking with what she knows.
i’d honestly rather her ‘keep it real’ in that aspect, than jump around the stage tryna prove a point.
I understand that she has never been a dancer. She has always been known for her powerful voice, but lately these performances make it seem as though she is just getting lazy. She should make sure that she doesnt lose the one thing that she is known for: her voice. Because she wont have her looks forever….even if she does people are not going to buy tickets to see her stand and look pretty on a stage. Bottom line she needs to work on her performances; she used to be able to sound EXACTLY like the studio version (those days are done obviously).
LL, you have a good point. I would actually hate to see MC even attempt any serious choreography, but damn she could at least find the beat and stay on it when she’s walking and wagging her finger lol.
Vision and Jermar…I wonder if this is really just a sign that she just doesn’t have the chops she used to. She did some incredible things with her voice on The Emancipation album, and one of the things that I really liked about it most is that you can tell she was determined to prove that she was back and better than ever. She approached every song with intensity and hunger and it really made her album much more soulful than past efforts. That kind of approach is clearly seriously lacking in all 3 new songs we’ve heard from her so far. Is she lazy or is she past her singing prime? Hmmmmm…the jury is out.

I think the song’s ok. I dunno but I always thought that Mariah has always bimbo-fied herself. She doesn’t need to do that cos she’s got a great voice.
Oh by the way, what do you guys in the USA think of Leona Lewis? Do you think she’s on par with Mariah?
What planet is everybody from? Show me any female singer that good, even at her worst. That performace may not have been 100% for Mariah, but it blows most other singers off the planet. Then on top of the incredible voice unmatched worldwide by anyone, look at her. She sets the bar so high nobody can touch it.
