Hate it or Love it: Tyler Perry’s “Meet the Browns”

So, this weekend I checked out Tyler Perry’s “Meet the Browns” starring Angela Bassett and Rick Fox and it pains me to say it but I hated it. I’ll admit it, I was skeptical that Angela and Rick would make a decent on screening pairing and my suspicions proved to be correct. Overall this movie was a real regression for Tyler and he was totally all over the place. I found myself wondering several times “where is he going with this?” Also, it really highlighted the problem with Tyler’s movies that they all have the same basic premise…you have a vulnerable struggling Black woman who is so guarded that she screws over a perfect Black man because she has been hurt one too many times. That plot is getting kind of played out and I’m kind of sick of seeing it. Although things always end well, I just gotta wonder…why do Black women have to be the source of the problem in all his movies?
Anyway, I looooove “Why Did I Get Married?”…but this effort from Tyler was not the business. There were too many stereotypes, cliches, the movie was long and drawn out with very little flow or purpose, the Madea cameo was pointless and not funny, and Angela and Rick had zero chemistry. Angela over-acted and brought no versatility to the role at all. She proved herself incapable of any type of comedic performance which might’ve made the movie seem less depressing. However, Jennifer Lewis was definitely the highlight and she added the few funny moments to the movie.
Did you check out “Meet the Browns”? What do you think of it?

I respect Tyler Perry for portraying black people in a positive light but for some reason I’m just not a fan. With the exception of the upcoming Star Trek movie he never made or been in a movie I want to see. I give him respect for the type of movie he makes.
I agree with you 100% on this post.
Didn’t care for it either.
I loved “Why Did I Get Married” and his plays…. but this one was dry. Tyler could have done better. I still will support anything Tyler does for the messages are positive which we need…
I second that emotion. Everything you wrote in your critique is dead on. I was highly disappointed when I walked out of the theatre.
Ok so….I’m gonna just wait for the bootleg or for it to come on DVD…..
i enjoyed the fact that he toned down the coonery
rick fox should never be allowed to act in a movie again, he was so unbelievable— and he had sooooooooo much makeup on he looked like a maniquin (i was half expecting him to freeze in place like the 80′ movie Maniquin”—- he made the relationship b/w him and basset’s character unbelievable (which unfortunately is 80% of the movie premise- which led to the movie feeling weak)
i think i laughed more as the credits were rolling when they showed outakes of the character Brown than the entire movie, he needs his own movie- cuz he was the only comic relief in the entire movie beside jennifer lewis’s character the drunk sister
PS— Angela Bassett is stunning, she looks great for her age (body and face)
Jermar you think he toned down the coonery? I think he toned down the buffoonery…but he stepped up the stereotypes 10 notches. On the one hand Rick Fox wasn’t the best actor, but I think compared to how Angela over-acted, he seemed more natural. However, he should definitely never be given another role again.
Angela looked great, but that didn’t make the pairing of her and Rick even remotely believable.
I agree 100% too Reecie. I was confused. The transitions were rough, the story line was typical Tyler and Rick was absolutely HORRIBLE. The two leads had absolutely NO chemistry. You are so right on that. Tyler really needs to slow down and think about his next movie. Spitting out trash like this is going to cost him some fans. It’s not all about the money Tyler. Slow DOWN!
People are entitled to like whatever moves them, but I cannot for the life of me understand the popularity of Tyler Perry. Shallow characters, maudlin, verrrrry predictable plots- (Cemetery plots, if you ask me)why do we settle for this ? NO wonder attorneys try so hard to get black juries…. I do not understand..
