Video: Jay-Z- “I Know” starring Zoe Kravitz
Jay-Z released his video for “I Know”. Great, another song about drugs, just what the world needs. The beat is hot and Hov’s flow is hot, but I just wish he would’ve picked something more productive to rap about. And don’t give me that whole bs about the drugs are a metaphor for his music argument. Anyway, he tapped Zoe Kravitz to star in the video and she does a good job coming across as totally stoned the entire time. I’ll give him credit for having some semblance of a plot and it does have some artistic aspects to it.
What do you guys think of the video? Does the video do the song any justice?

I agree that the last thing we need right now is a song about drugs, but I really think that the only reason he brought this out is because it was released from the American Gangster album (which is mainly centered around the theme of drugs in the 70’s). Otherwise Im sure he would have brought out something with a little more substance.
Drugs are a metaphor for him… that whole third verse is a damn BEAST.
How could you leave me?
I thought that you needed me
When the world got too much and you pleaded with me
Who helped you immediately?
How speedy of me
How could you deny me so vehemently?
Now your body is shakin’ trying to free it of me
And your soul is in control, trying to lead it from me
And your heart no longer pledge allegiance to me
Damn, I’m missing the days when you needed the D
Jay said that he picked this beat, which is produced by The Neptunes, because he felt like the beat sounded like being high on heroin. This is the part of his album after the celebration of coming up (Roc Boys) and right before the “Party Life” where people are just out of their minds high. Yes, its another song about drugs, but we all know the idea of this concept album and I think Jay SMASHED this track… whatever happened to the videos for “Say Hello” and “Fallin”? I NEED A FINISH TO THE STORY FROM “ROC BOYS”!!! lol
I agree with vision, the song is from american gangster -> which was modeled after the movie -> which is mostly concerned with drugs. Plus, you gotta give jay credit cuz toward the end of the cd, like the movie, the drug empire/high-life lifestyle all falls apart which I think is at least kinda close to sending a good message.
Here is the thing, I actually like the song…but there is a much bigger part of me that just feels like “we got to do better”. Sure Jay-Z did the whole themed album based on a drug movie, but at some point I have to ask a 38 (THIRTY EIGHT) year old successful Black man and one person dynasty…when are you going to lend your voice to a more productive message? (Sidebar: Sen. Barack Obama is 46 years old and he is running for President of the United States! How many more decades is it going to take before we realize that there is more in a black man’s destiny than to be drug dealers, rappers, and athletes?) He kind of had slightly more mature music with Kingdom Come then when it doesn’t sell off the charts he acts like it was a mistake to go that route.
Jay is taking the easy way out with this kind of music. It might not be easy as far as the sophistication of his flows/rhymes, lyrics whatever…but it is easy in the sense that music like this is easier to sell. You can give me the drug=music metaphor argument all day and all night, but we all know that he isn’t selling these records because he is brilliant with metaphors; he is selling these records because he is talking money, drugs, etc.
Anyway…I know that was preachy…but this is part of the reason why I haven’t been as motivated as I should be to post music. It’s that time when my head is buried in politics and not entertainment, so posting sh!t like this seems a bit counter-productive. However…I can step off my high horse and admit that ultimately this is entertainment so it is obviously not a credible source for enlightenment. That’s my rant for the day lol.
I agree with thehaytidream great track as is the whole album…
I agree with Reecie in that “we gotta do better,” but not with the rest…i think Jay portrays a pretty positive image for people to see…and this album takes one thru the whole process of a drugs…all the way to Fallin, where he spells out all the stuff that can happen to a dealer…
