Story Bits: RIP Heath Ledger, Soulja Boy Believes He’s the Hottest, Raekwon disses Jay-Z/Kanye

Yesterday Heath Ledger suddenly passed away in his New York apartment of an apparent (accidental) prescription drug overdose. Even though this blog covers mostly urban entertainment, I would be remiss in not mentioning his passing. I actually really liked Heath’s work as an actor and was looking forward to his performance in the upcoming Batman movie. It is so shocking and tragic that someone who is so young (28) passed away with so much life left to live. HM sends our condolences out to his family. Story

On a lighter note….I like Soulja Boy…he is a relatively harmless kid aside from dumbing down Hip Hop to an even lower low…but I usually give him a pass since he is just a kid. But after reading his remarks to MTV, I think he doesn’t understand that his success is not attributed to him being the hottest rapper or a tight MC, but to coming up with a ridiculous dance that is fun and catchy. Here is a little more background:

“I’m Grammy-nominated,” he continued, citing his credentials. “If I look at the new list and I compare myself to all 10 of the artists and some don’t add up, I’ll be like, ‘Wow. I should be #1 if it’s right now. I’m #1.”

Soulja Boy was more candid when asked how he ranks specifically against alumni of the first Hottest MCs list, like Weezy, ‘Ye and Jay-Z.

“Right now, yes [I'm hotter than them],” he answered as their names were read to him one by one.

He said he is the best-selling online, highest-ranking on the Web and the most publicized rapper worldwide right now.

“Today, January — whatever the date this is — 2008, yes [I am the hottest],” SB emphasized.

CLEARLY…Soulja Boy has been spending too much around 50 Cent’s camp. It is one thing for someone like Kanye to argue that he is in the top 3 after 3 classic albums…but Soulja Boy? lmao….heeeeeell naw. I got a good laugh out of that one though.

Raekwon decided to jump on the stupid comment train in an interview with NY Daily News. Here is the story:

Wu-Tang member Raekwon has launched a shocking attack on two of Hip Hop’s most prized assets, Jay-Z and Kanye West.

Speaking to the New York Daily News, the Killer Bee criticised the pair, saying that they were not ‘street’ enough, “A lot of street people don’t put stock in them anymore because they aren’t doing enough to excite anyone.”

Raekwon went on to say that the pair had lost touch with their roots and in order to restore their credibility the two superstars should return to the “hood” and donate $100,000 (£512,000).

When asked if he would be donating too, he stated that he didn’t have the finances to do this.

Yeah, because the only thing Black men should ever strive to do in life is be “street enough”. Give me a got damn break! It’s also funny about how people have so many ideas about what OTHER people should be doing with THEIR money. Some people say stupid sh!t just to be saying something even though it makes no sense.

Are you a fan of Heath Ledger’s work? Does Soulja Boy really deserve to be #1? When will people get past this mentality that Black men have to be street or hood to be redeemable?

The only Heath Ledger movie I saw was the Patriot and I enjoyed it. When I found out that he was going to play the Joker in the new Batman movie I was surprise. I didn’t think he was the right choice and couldn’t see him playing the role. I guess I kind of typed cast him or put him in a pretty boy box but after watching the trailer for the Dark Knight movie and hearing how much time he put into the role, he impressed me and pretty much converted me. Just from watching the trailer alone everybody was buzzing about him. It’s a shame that his career was cut short and that his daughter will never get the chance to know him.

I hate to break it to Soulja Boy but he is just a gimmick. New Kids on the Block, Kris Kross, Vanilla Ice and etc sold a lot of records and used to be hot but we don’t remember them so fondly. Most people look at him as a gimmick that is cashing in on the whole ATL movement. The type of music he is doing now is what most people say is wrong with music and Hip Hop. Soulja Boy is a ringtone celebrity. Unless he mature his sound and is a dope MC I can’t see him being around five or even three years from now. Enjoy being on the scream tour and your 15 minutes as fame while you can.

Why is it that whenever a black man because success and mature someone have to blast that person for not being hood or street. I remember Bow Wow blast Will Smith and said he wasn’t a real rapper. I hear people say Obama isn’t black enough. The drop out rate for blacks is at a all time high, 70% of black familes are fatherless, a lot of black people are going to jail than finishing school, the number one cause of death for blacks is homicide, and you want to blast Kanye and Jay Z for not being hood? I agree with Reecie, Black men shouldn’t strive to be hood, we should strive to be educated, good fathers, and productive members of society. People like Obama, Jay Z, Michael Jordan, Kanye West, Will Smith and etc are setting a good example for black people. We shouldn’t blast them for not keeping it hood or gangster.

  1. I am 13 and I honestly do not enjoy (actually, I despise) Soulja Boy.

    RIP HEATH.

Raekwon has good enough skills to diss, but not like THAT…he’s on some ignorant ish.

    RIP Heath Ledger

Soulja Boy is most certainly a gimmick as Stallion said, although his commercial success thus far is pretty remarkable. Still I don’t see him lasting very long.

Raekwon’s comment were ignorant, first for the fact that the goal for black america shouldn’t be to be “hood or street enough” and second for the fact that Kanye, at least from my understanding from listening to songs like champion, never really was from the “hood.” Although I would like to see more rappers doing things to elevate black society.

  2. I would never say I was a particular fan of his, but thought he did an outstanding job in both the Patriot and Knights Tale. I’m a frequent reader of Aintitcoolnews.com, and have been up to speed on the Dark Knight movie since Christopher Nolan announced that he planned on making a trilogy ark with Christian Bale for the Batman franchise. I wasn’t entirely sold on the casting choice, but was blown away by the first image of Ledger’s Ichi The Killer-esque Joker face.
Then I saw the first 6 minutes of Batman before the IMAX version of I Am Legend.
    WOW
    Jack Nicolson is now retired.
As someone who’s interested in the art of acting and becoming more aware of method, I can comprehend the kind of toll it would take on one’s mind to truely do a charachter study on the most twisted viliian of the Batman cannon. Hence his lack of sleep and dependecy on sleeping pills, and the probable cause of his death.

Soulja Boy needs to take a nap, wake up, pay his new baby’s momma, and STFU

Raekwon made the “purple tape” back in like 93. He hasn’t made anything halfway as compelling or classic since. And I’m a WU head. Matter of fact, his style grew lazy and more complacent as his conterpart in WU, Ghostface quickly surpassed him and has been on a steady road of creativity and has made a name outside of the WU to the point where he’s comfortable enough to outwardly crititque them. Rae doesn’t have the liberty as an artist to put established artists on blast, especially when they’re on top of their game and you’re the opposite. Just because he’s working with Dre, that doesn’t mean shit.
And the whole crabs in the barrell shit needs to just stop NOW. I’m tired of the bullshit. The whole not “street” or “black” enough thing is an old slave mentality and it’s caused enough social destruction, and it better not be the downfall of the probable first black president. We say we want change, but practice hate along the way.
    BTW, fuck Bob Johnson

i read the soulja boy story entirely…and he’s right…he didnt say “im the hottest rapper of all time”…he sd he’s the hottest “right now”…the top ten they did on mtv was for hottest to date…so if they did a hottest rapper in the game right now…he would could arguably be in top 5…most digi downloads ever, most popular artist on the internet right now, and has caused a flood gate of kids trying to redo “superman”-crank dat batman, dat spiderman, dat spongebob, dat etc…

i aint mad at him…now will he be the hottest 6 months from now…long as he got these kids on deck…who knows
