Big Night at the Oscars!

What an amazing night it was for Black folks at the Oscars! Jennifer Hudson took hold the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress and Forrest Whitaker got the gold for Best Actor. Both of them were so humble and so touched by their awards that it was so inspirational. It’s amazing how some people accept these awards in such a cavalier nonchalant manner yet these two thespians were so grateful. More stars should be like them! Will Smith’s son, Jayden, was soooo adorable when he presented two awards…you gotta love that kid! The Dreamgirls performance was absolutely magnificent! Jennifer, Beyonce, Anika Noni Rose, and Keith Robinson all did the damn thing! That was the most emphatic performance I’ve seen Beyonce do of “Listen”…perhaps she channeled some of that Oscar disappointment into some real emotion. However, when Melissa Etheridge beat out 3 Dreamgirls songs right after such remarkable performances, it felt like one step forward and two steps back. Sure it was totally political, but damn…what a joke! I guess the Academy would rather honor a pimps and hoes song than one that showcases the talents of Black folks. Speaking of pimps and hoes…I will say that I really appreciate how Dreamgirls represented for us in such a positive way at the Oscars. This was a wonderful night for the Black History books. Congrats to all the winners and nominees!

Watch the incredible Dreamgirls performance

JHud accepts her award

Forrest accepts his award

What do you think about the Oscar wins for JHud and Forrest? Wasn’t Dreamgirls snubbed for Best Song? Do you think that these wins are showing progress in Hollywood for Black actors?

    JHud? really Reecie? lol…

Great night indeed. I watched the Oscars for like an hour and some change and then rolled out the crib. I called my mom a few minuted later and she told me Jennifer Hudson won. I felt a lil bad for missing that part. I am very happy for her and more especially, Forrest….That dude put in his dues….hard work pays off…Black Star Power indeed…great work…

But yea, the opening hour of the Oscars was a bore. lol.

I think JHud “pushed” Bey a little on Listen. I was almost afraid J was gonna sing it better than she in the beginning. Bey blew the ending out though!
    Most def!!!

I’m happy for them both. You know I kind of feel sorry for that little girl from little Ms. Sunshine. She is always getting beat by Jennifer and you can just tell by the look on her face she want to win at least one award. Oh well better luck next year. Wow America Idol reject are doing well this year first Robyn Troup and now Jennifer Hudson. I could name more example but I’m just being lazy.

Beyonce did a better job here singing listen then she did at the Grammy. I heard she was sick that night and that must had been a tough break. Wow for Jennifer Hudson not only did she win an oscar and crush any chances that little girl from little ms. sunshine had of winning any type of award but she got the chance to be involve in a performance like that. She was awesome.

  1. It’s not some big conspiracy that “Dreamgirls” lost to “An Inconvenient Truth” in the Best Original Song category…it makes perfect sense.

They had three songs in the category (”Patience,” “Listen” and “Love You I Do”), which probably split the vote between them. It’s like when all the actresses from “Desperate Housewives” were nominated for the Best Actress Emmy. People loved “Desperate Housewives,” but didn’t know which housewife to vote for. So, some people voted for Felicity Huffman, others voted for Marcia Cross and some for Teri Hatcher. Thanks to them splitting the vote, the Emmy ended up going to Mary Louise Parker from “Weeds.”

I suspect the same thing happened with “Dreamgirls” last night, esp. since they had already picked up the Best Achievement in Sound Oscar.

No politics involved, just too much of a good thing for “Dreamgirls.”

If you haven’t seen “Little Miss Sunshine,” you’re definitely missing out…definitely one of my favorite movies of the year. Abigail Breslin is wonderful in the part and I have no doubt that she’ll be back at the Oscars later.

I’m really glad Departed won Best Film. It really was the best film but I had a feeling from the buzz that it wasn’t going to win because it was the most conventional of all the nominated films. And the Academy voters love to reward originality simply for originality’s sake, regardless of quality.

I didn’t agree with Whitaker winning. That was a very easy role to play. I hope he won that award in part of because of his amazing job on “The Shield”.

  2. I was too busy looking at them big ol bitties.

Total load of crap….Whitaker’s role was in no way easy…can you play a brutal homicidal dictator but still make him sympathetic and understandable?!?! It was one of the best performances of the last 10 years. I HATED Dreamgirls so when it lost for song I was happy, all those songs were awful, it is not a conspiracy all those songs were forgettable fluff. I was glad for Jennifer, but would have preffered Eddie to have won and the Japanese girl from Babel to have won supporting actor/actress.

This is hardly one for the record books…the last 4 years black people have been nominated so it’s hardly a big deal…maybe when a black director/scriptwriter wins I will cheer.

Forrest Whitaker’s acceptance speech was done with class, humility, and love for the art. When they say that he’s a charming and chill individual in person, you can see why. Many actors should take a page out of his book when it comes to representing the art and being humble. Bravo! Bravo!

    JHud…errr…Jennifer Hudson…much respect to you!

“Whitaker’s role was in no way easy…can you play a brutal homicidal dictator but still make him sympathetic and understandable”

Those are the results of the work of the producers, writers, and director.
