Devin The Dude - Treating Me Cold (ft. Tony Mac)
(listen)
Devin the Dude is one of the most under appreciated artists in hip-hop. His unique style, craft story telling, and comical relief is refreshing…however, the Dude isn’t for everyone. Wikipedia accurately describes Devin the Dude’s style as: “Besides sex, relationships, smoking marijuana, partying, and conscious or proverbial themes, much of Devin’s work is also light-hearted and comically self-deprecating.” Even though he has been recognized throughout hip-hop as evident with his work with Dr. Dre, Scarface, Nas, The Roots, and more. But his sophomore album failed to crossover to achieve the success of a Paul Wall and Mike Jones (before the H-Town took over for a year), despite production from Dr. Dre, DJ Premiere, David Banner, and Raphael Saadiq. While that album was cool, I think the best album to capture Devin the Dude is his third album, To The X-Treme.

Devin the Dude comes strong on “Treating Me Cold” while a VERY familiar 80s R&B sample (I can’t think of who it is) and a great storytelling as he talks the women he is ready to slow down with, but she continues to leave him lonely and knows how to treat him cold. The Dude claims: “You always keep me waiting/Your time is always taken/Instead of good love making/You got me up in here masturbating.” Lyrics like that aren’t going to solve any world problems, but it’s funny as hell and I think us men can relate to it (even though we would admit it). Buy his new album scheduled for release on March 15th.

Snoop Dogg - Wanna Be’s (ft. Young Jeezy) (listen)
Snoop has been all over the place collaborating with every hip-hop artist in the game. Can’t hate on Snoop keeping his bank account runneth over. On this laid-back, heavy “putting the p in phunk” with a y on the end (aka funky) bass line, Snoop and Jeezy both spit about how these cats wanna be like them. While the lyrical concept behind Wanna Be’s is weak, the hook is infectious with Nate Dogg’s crooning. Young Jeezy’s confidence steals the show but his cocky flow is still very slow and that style compliments the west coast influenced track very well.

Talib Kweli - Young Man (ft. John Legend) (Produced by Kanye West) (listen)
One of the best tracks from Talib Kweli’s new mixtape (purchase at OKP). You can’t go wrong with G.O.O.D and a hungry Talib Kweli. Everyone will enjoy this introspective track…

  1. Wanna Be’s:
I love to hear the sound of West Coast rap evolve. This track is so damn soulful and Jeezy’s verse is actually a lil up tempo. You were definitely right about Nate Dogg’s chorus… does any one else make a hook like that dude?

    Young Man:
I heard this a lil while ago and it’s been on heavy rotation ever since. The best thing to ever happen to Talib Kweli was Kanye West.

  2. and vice versa. Talib let Kanye be a headliner, Kanye’s 1st tour and Kanye saved Talib’s career with “Get By”

What you think about that devin?

  3. I didn’t even know that about Kanye and Talib. I always thought Kanye got his break when Hip-Hop from Roc-A-Fella peeped the “Truth” beat for Beanie. I guess he was talkin about the beginning of his RAP career, rather than his production career.

The Devin The Dude track is hot, I definitely think the production is SERIOUS, but its almost a little too soulful for the type of track it is. Devin is definitely a funny dude, but this track almost seems to serious for him. What you think?

  4. Theyre all hot.

  5. Devin is a hip hop genius. He makes hip hop fun!!!!
This new song kinda blows, it does not sound like it was mixed.

Devin the Dude is the truth and that track is the bomb. I actually think the track isn’t mixed, it’s just been posted on Houston So Real afaik and might or might not be released. Oh and the sample is Alexander O’Neal’s “If You Were Here Tonight”, peep it on youtube:

The Snoop and Kweli tracks are both dope, I think Kweli is overrated though. He really only has one style, one delivery, one tone of voice… He was good together with Mos but solo, I don’t know…
