Anything But a Sista!

The current Miss USA, Tara Conner,  has been caught underage drinking at New York bars on several occasions and is rumored to have tested positive for cocaine; yet she is still allowed to keep her title as Miss USA. Conner will be entering rehab which is pretty damn crazy for someone who just turned 21 yesterday. This whole situation really sickens me, because it is obvious that Trump is being outrageously lenient on a person that is supposed to represent the ideals and values of young American women, because she is a 5-foot-5 blonde. I’m sure that the fact that the new Miss USA would’ve been runner up Tamiko Nash, a sista from California, swayed his decision to give Conner a second chance. I’m not saying he’s racist, but perhaps he feels like it’s better to send the message that it’s okay to drink and do drugs rather than send the message that a black woman might know how to conduct herself more appropriately than a white woman. What do you guys think…if the situation were reversed and Miss USA was Black and the runner-up was White, would Trump have even blinked before firing her? Does Trump suddenly have a heart of gold? Or are there “other” reasons why he’s being so forgiving and sympathetic?

Real talk, i think turning this into a black/white thing, although it could bring forth interesting discourse, is quite pointless. At the end of the day, ole girl was wildin and coke’d out and it was a bad look. Cats could either ex her or give her a chance. Of course we could spend an eon thinking of conspiracy theories and the possible “what if it was a black woman” but really what would that be solving. Let’s just move on to some other pertinent ish….

Personally, i think that her being put out on front street is a good look for America because it shows that just because you’re Miss USA, you’re not perfect and that no one is. At the end of the all the smiles and waves and cheers, these women are all human beings with faults. So what she messed up and so what that she’s white…We all mess up every single day. Moving on….While I know Reecie that you may not have wanted to stir up anything more than a conversation, it’s simple things like this that cause many people (white and non-white) to feel that all black people do is look at the negative instead of seeing the positive strides….that’s how i feel.

Is it really surprising to see someone of this age drink and do drug. Should we really be surprise when a celebrity does it?

Trump would have replaced the sista quick and in a hurry.

Obviously there is no point other than discourse…but the fact is that there are different standards for black people and white people. This is a prime example of the double standard in this country. Black basketball players get heated and go to blows on the court and everybody’s down their throat (rightfully so)…but a white woman who is supposed to be a role model (she’s Miss USA for goodness sake not a pop star like Britney Spears or a sex-tape making celebrity like Paris Hilton) is coke’d out and liquored up on the job and everyone is so quick to forgive her? Forgive me if I don’t understand how that is so easy to do.

I grew up watching Miss USA and Miss America pageants and that meant something to me as a young girl. This may be hard to believe but there are lot of people out there that look up to people like Miss USA and this just a disgrace to the title. If we were talking Britney Spears showing her cooch all over the place instead of being at home taking care of her kids, I would say she’s a grown woman who didn’t sign up to be a role model…however, we’re talking about someone who DID sign up to be a role model. People in this country aren’t held accountable for their actions and this is a reflection of the denigration of those standards. Sure it’s not that serious, but what a joke that someone could act in such a reprehensible manner and still keep such a prestigious title.

As far as this being proof that black people only look for the negative instead of seeing the positive strides…where are the positive strides in this? I don’t see anything positive in the situation whatsoever…it’s a disgrace! If you go to other message boards you will see white people expressing outrage over the situation as well. Of course they’re not going to come from the perspective that she’s keeping her job because they don’t want a black woman to take over the title…but regardless of who was next in line, she should’ve been given her walking papers!

Oh what’s next…Paris Hilton for Miss USA?

I concur with your statements and do understand your thesis that she shoulda been given the walking papers and not a slap in the wrist…and i do see disparities in treatments b/w black and white people who are in the spotlight. i do see those things but i guess i just get somewhat annoyed when something happens folk are quick to say, “what if that was a black person?” it’s just trite after a while…but i do feel what you’re sayin…so u look up to the pageants eh?

    • Reecie
    • December 19th, 2006 at 1:23 pm

In some cases it is trite…in this case, I do think that it is a legitimate question. Other people in the Miss USA and Miss Universe organization have been fired for far less, yet they excuse her for doing drugs, reportedly making out with Miss Teen USA, partying all the time, and underage drinking? Something is fishy there. Maybe she just gives good head and it’s not a race thing…I could be on the wrong page here, but I’m just saying…would it have killed them to just give it to the sista who clearly has no behavioral issues?

And yes I USED to love the pageants when I was kid. lol

Making out with Miss Teen USA? what’s the offense again? lmao

also, the sista coulda got up in there and done the damn thing, or she coulda tried to be a jump-off for some basketball team. who knows. lol..

    u ever joined pageants?

  1. ThatDude said it best: “Trump would have replaced the sista quick and in a hurry.”

Sorry thesis, but Imma have to roll with Reecie on this one. I mean, she got crack in her blood!! CRACK!!!! Had that been a sister, not only would she made the next Clipse record, but white people at my job would think that all black girls do crack (on top of the stereotypes they face today)

    double standard is shady.

I don’t understand why you’re trying to mix the news and you own opinions/assumptions together!!!!!!

Yes, I think this woman should lose the title. But you’re going off and calling Donald Trump a racist and ranting. There’s no proof of him being a racist. Please…

“But you’re going off and calling Donald Trump a racist and ranting. There’s no proof of him being a racist. Please…”

I said “I’m not saying he’s racist” verbatim. I’m not claiming to be an AP news reporter, just a blogger. I believe that race was a factor…do I believe that Trump has anything against blacks? Not at all. Do I believe that people are more likely to be sympathetic to a white woman than a black woman? Absolutely. Just like I believe that there’s no way in hell that Bill Clinton would’ve ever been impeached if Colin Powell was his vice president! lmao…chill out sweetie!

Tameko Nash is actually dating actor Brian White…look at you thinking the worst of a sista! tsk tsk lol. Never joined a pageant though…I’m too shy!

I see where you’re coming from. But it seems like 90% of the time when people look at something gone wrong and see a situation where “white vs. black” can be manipulated, they automatically throw up the racism card. Like crying wolf…

There’s many elements to a situation and the racist card shouldn’t been just throw around. Calling someone a racist, labeling a group as racist, or a situation as racism is a serious charge that shouldn’t been throw around like it’s nothing.

Kenya Moore, the second Black woman to win the Miss USA title (1994) spoke on Trump’s decision to give Tara Conner a second chance. Here is some of what she had to say:

“I can’t really make that call as to whether he made the right decision, but I feel he made a compassionate decision instead of the bare bones of the decision he should have made. I think by giving this current Miss USA a opportunity to keep her crown after such harsh behavior – allegedly doing illicit drugs and having this party girl behavior –she’s pretty much getting a slap on her wrist,”

“What the crown stands for is a woman who holds a certain moral standard, who is an inspiration to young girls, who is a role model. Why give her this chance at this stage? Perhaps let her build her life and redeem herself on her own time – I don’t think while she’s Miss USA.”

“When you become a Miss USA or you sign any type of endorsement deal or become an employee of the Miss Universe Organization, you sign a morality clause in your contract basically saying you will not bring disrepute, you will not bring scandal, and you will not bring these type of issues to the organization on behalf or yourself or the sponsors involved,”

“When any other celebrity comes under fire, like Kobe [Bryant] or other people, for morality issues, they are dealt a severe hand. [Conner is] someone who willingly took the position of being a role model. Some people are role models and they didn’t intend to be… but Miss USA, you go in the pageant knowing that you have to meet certain requirements and that you have to be legally bound to a morality clause. If someone breaks that, and it is proven, then why wouldn’t her punishment be sufficient to the crime.”

“It’s unfortunate because we still live in America. We still live in a racially [divided] climate, she said. “When Vanessa [Williams] went through certain things in her life and it was found out during her reign, she was dealt a very severe hand. So now you have this blonde, blue-eyed girl who has done, a very scandalous – even illegal thing, yet she gets a slap on the wrist. I’m all for somebody being given a second chance, no one is perfect. But why is it you can’t be a good role model for 365 days? And if you don’t draw the line at illegal activity, where do you draw the line?”

“I hope she does get her life together,” Moore encouragingly said. “I think she was very sincere and her apology was heartfelt. I believed everything she said when she thanked Mr. Trump for giving her a second chance. I just happen to think he’s sending the wrong message by not firing her.”

Thanks for this Reecie and it further accentuates the points you previously made…

  2. what about Vanessa Williams? didn’t she get her crown taken for posing naked?

crack is much worse than some nude photos.

Someone sold nude pics of Vanessa Williams to a mag after she was crowned Miss America (Which is different than Miss USA, but supposedly more lenient), so she was stripped of her crown. She didn’t pose for the pics while she was Miss America though if that’s any consolation.

This should give you some insight into how Donald feels about black people: (taken from the NY POST)

Speaking about a black accountant at Trump Plaza, Mr. Trump, according to the author, opined that “laziness is a trait in blacks” and said to Mr. O’Donnell: “I’ve got black accountants at Trump Castle and at Trump Plaza. Black guys counting my money! I hate it. The only kind of people I want counting my money are short guys that wear yarmulkes every day.”

  3. Everyone is so sensitive about words. We never know what would have happened if it was a sisita, so we can only speculate.

Donald Trump has alot of money he can do and say whatever he wants to. Hell, I don’t want no brothas building me a house or fixing on my car. We all know who does a better job at that. I don’t blame Trump.

She should get a second chance, how many chances where Darryl Strawberry, Doc Goodden, Rick James given?
